Per Welinder
Per Nils Welinder was born on April 17, 1962 at Täby, just outside Stockholm, Sweden. He is a pro skateboarder, and along with Tony Hawk is a co-founder of Birdhouse Projects and Birdhouse Skateboards.
Per Welinder has the honor of being the only person to have ever beaten the legendary Rodney Mullen in a skating competition. During skateboardings popularity in the 1980s, Per Welinder and Rodney Mullen often competed in freestyle skate contests, and Welinder regularly came in 2nd place and Rodney Mullen would always win. But at a 1983 competition, Mullen was off his game that day due to various reasons, and Welinder won the contest. Rodney Mullen retired for a year to deal with some issues, but soon returned back to winning all the freestyle contests, overshadowing Welinder and everyone else. However, Per Welinder consistently remained the second most popular freestyler in skateboarding.
Besides just Welinder's popular freestyle board model, he also had a street model board with the cool Per Welinder skull (Nordic Skull) graphic and a long nose. It was one of the most boarders among skaters for a few years. After this, he also introduced a hybrid model in 1990 called the "Nordic Sperm", which was also relatively popular. Per Welinder was also seen in many of the Bones Brigade videos such as "The Bones Brigade Video Show", "Future Primitive", and "Ban This".
It was in January of 1992 that Welinder left Powell-Peralta and started a new company called Birdhouse Projects with fellow Powell-Peralta team member Tony Hawk as his business partner. Per Welinder is now loaded with cash.
